Answering Your Paver Questions

What is the difference between the three sizes you sell?

Modular pavers are laid with a mortar joint and are typically used in commercial applications. We call them "modular" because they bond out in neat eight inch modules when one includes the mortar joint of 3/8". Because they are exactly twice as long as they are wide (counting the mortar joint) they can be laid in any pattern including basketweave.

Split pavers are just like Modular pavers except they are half as thick (split) and can only be used over a solid supporting surface such as concrete. They must be laid with a mortar joint to achieve the full 8x4 dimensions.

True pavers have the same bed thickness (2-1/4") as Modular pavers but are laid without a joint. Hence they are truly 8x4 inches in length and width. True pavers are laid over sand and then locked together by loose sand swept into the joints.

Can I use pavers on a driveway?

Yes! You must do a good job of sub-grade preparation to prevent paver movement over time. Well compacted base and sand together with a good edge restraint, will insure a permanent and trouble-free job. For applications requiring heavy vehicular traffic, you must use a paver that is 2-5/8 inches thick. Yankee Hill does not manufacture this size. However, Bear Path™ pavers from Pacific Clay can be used in such applications.

Will pavers hold up in freezing weather?

Yes! We manufacture and sell only pavers that meet the quality standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM quality standards require pavers to meet standards that have proven successful in predicting durability. We test regularly and know from experience that our pavers will hold up. Not all manufacturers can meet this requirement. Occasionally, pavers that do not meet the ASTM standards will fail when repeatedly frozen when wet.

Can I install pavers myself?

Certainly! Installing pavers is hard but very satisfying work. We recommend you use our True pavers which are laid without mortar joints. A good compacted base over lain with compacted sand, smoothed to insure a flat surface is the basis of an attractive paver job. Setting the pavers is the fun part. Once the dirt work is done, the pavers install quickly and form an attractive, colorful, and permanent surface.
