The Brick Association of the Carolinas has an excellent review of how to do a backyard project in pavers. Click on this link to learn how easy it is to install your own walkway or patio. There are full details on how to prepare the sub-grade, provide a level bed of sand, and insure a quality application. Pavers and other solid brick cover about one-fourth of a square foot when laid flat. To calculate how many bricks you need for a project, figure out the square footage to be covered and multiply by four and a half. If you want the paver bricks to form an edging you can lay them laid end-to-end to form a four-inch wide edge or lay them next to one another to create an edging eight-inches wide. For the narrow edge figure about 1.5 bricks per lineal foot. For the wide edge you'll need three bricks per lineal foot.
